Gifted Brooklyn Dispensary – Brooklyn’s First Black Woman-Owned Dispensary

Unlike other states, New York decided that the first legal recreational dispensaries should be opened by small operators. This is intended to prevent larger companies and former medical cannabis groups from monopolizing the market, which has been a challenge in other states where it has been implemented.

Matawana is the city’s first Black woman-owned dispensary. The Brooklyn native says her family was justice-impacted by previous criminalization and she is proud to have a role in the industry. But she also wants to make sure the legal cannabis economy is protected from grey-market smoke shops. The city has ramped up enforcement, but they are still fighting to get the power to inspect and shut down illegal dispensaries.

Gifted BK, which calls itself more than a dispensary, describes itself as a “cultural destination that enhances alchemy through different mediums.” The Brooklyn-based dispensary has floor-to-ceiling windows, a full wall of Brooklyn murals, and a music wall that pays homage to local musicians. Guests can purchase a wide range of products including flower, pre-rolls, edibles, and CBD-infused topical creams.

The dispensary has a mission to uplift and empower marginalized communities through their work with local organizations. They are a trusted resource in promoting responsible cannabis consumption and they’re committed to supporting POC, women, and LGBTQ-owned businesses. The store is currently open in a design-forward pop-up until the permanent location, which will be just next door, is ready to serve customers. The store is also offering delivery throughout Queens and Brooklyn.
